GSM-Based SOS Alert System

Solar Powered ยท No Sensors ยท One-Call Activation

System Overview

The GSM-based SOS unit is an emergency alert system designed as part of the Early Wild-Animal Warning System (EWWS) to ensure rapid communication and warning dissemination among forest rangers and villages during Lion, Leopard, or Tiger movement or human-wildlife conflict situations.

This system relies on human observation and manual triggering by forest rangers when a Lion, Leopard, or Tiger is sighted near villages, forest boundaries, roads, or agricultural areas.

The system operates on a GSM communication network, making it suitable for remote forest locations with basic mobile connectivity. Solar power with battery backup means no grid power is needed.

Once a ranger initiates an SOS call, the system automatically:

  • Activates a hooter (siren) for audible public warning
  • Turns ON a high-intensity warning light
  • Sends SMS alerts to pre-registered ranger mobile numbers
  • Reports alerts to a centralized dashboard for remote monitoring and preventive action
  • Logs human-wildlife conflict and animal-movement incidents for proactive planning

How the SOS System Works

1

Authorized Ranger Mobile

Ranger initiates an SOS call

2

GSM Mobile Network

Call carried over cellular network

3

GSM Module

Call detection and SMS engine

4

Microcontroller / Control Unit

Validates caller ID and triggers alarm outputs

5

SMS Alert

Sent to 4 pre-mapped ranger numbers

Hooter / Audible Warning

High-decibel siren for audible public warning.

High-Intensity Warning Light

Flashing beacon for visual warning.

SMS Alerts

Mapped rangers receive real-time information and initiate field response.

Power Supply: Battery / Solar / DC Supply โ€” 24ร—7 Operation. The system operates without sensors; activation is manual via a ranger call. One-call trigger: no call pickup needed.

System Objectives & Working Principle

System Objectives

  • Provide immediate local warning through sound and light
  • Enable fast information sharing among ranger teams
  • Reduce response time during Lion, Leopard & Tiger movement events
  • Improve ranger safety and coordination
  • Support human-wildlife conflict mitigation without complex infrastructure
  • Enable centralized remote monitoring and dashboard access for the forest team

System Working Principle

A forest ranger observes Lion, Leopard, or Tiger movement, or a potential conflict situation, and places a call to the SOS system's dedicated GSM number.

The system detects the incoming call from an authorized number. Upon validation, the hooter is activated and the warning light is switched ON.

Simultaneously, SMS alerts are sent to pre-configured ranger mobile numbers, enabling a real-time field response.

Note: The call does not need to be answered โ€” the system works on ring detection, ensuring faster activation.
